Campus Recycling Improvements

Course:

25.108 - Introduction to Engineering II (Chemical Engineering),

10.308 - Intro to Materials Science and Engineering

10.508 - Material Science and Engineering

Instructor: Krishna Vedula

Partner: UML's Office of Environmental Health & Safety (EHS)

Partnership Description:  The EHS Office is responsible for protecting the environment on and around all locations of the UML campus.  Supervisor, Rich Lemoine, an enthusiastic supporter of students, remains interested in new ideas for improving campus and wider environmentalism.  Rich met with Krishna Vedula and the SLICE Coordinator to discuss potential curriculum components with regards to the impact of the chemical composition of materials and recycling, at three levels: first year, junior year and graduate students.  Rich served as a resource for students during the S-L components and linked them with other contact people as appropriate.

Project Description:  Researched and Recommended Improvements to the EHS Office Campus Recycling Programs.  Researching the chemical structure of materials and their relevance to recycling, the Introduction to Engineering II (Chem. Eng.) class made a minor contribution to raising awareness of improvements to the campus recycling programs.

Learning objectives met by the S-L project were for students to:

  • Exploration of behind the scenes campus functions and people
  • Practice research skills
  • Practice writing skills

Community objectives met by the S-L project:

Engaged students in the work of the EHS and raised awareness of ways to reuse and recycle different materials on campus.
